Rice & Spice – Dana Mandi around 42nd and Chestnut in West Philly is hands down one of my favorite places to eat Indian food!!! The Samosa’s are out of this world! My friend Sharon was visiting from NYC and I couldn’t wait to share this gem with her.
I feel like I am visiting family with each visit. I had to learn the how to order, but once you get it you get it. There is a basket near the water with blank pieces of paper in it. Write down your order and take it to the kitchen window or give it to someone in the store. Wallaaa you are over the learning curve. They have a TV in the dining room where they play Ballywood movies This adds such a nice touch!
I started going in to this store looking for spices. With every visit I would find a new treasures and I got to know the family that owns and operates the place. I still struggle with my own limits in communication but they are patient with me and I have learned to just ask for help.
The Samosa’s are amazing here! They are one of my favorite items. Everything i have tried has been amazing. A a cool Mango Lassi is my favorite drink to cool off the bite of the spice.
The front of the store is a grocery store is an great grocery store with many treasures to find. One of the biggest scores you will make is Paneer! I have searched wide and far for Paneer in Philly only to come up empty handed, It is located in the freezer section towards the back of the store. Grab some like I did. Will be building some recipes around the Paneer this week stay tuned,
